If you’ve seen people adding cottage cheese to their ice cream recipes, you might be wondering why? Besides being a way to add protein to your ice cream without using powders or protein shakes, it also gives a creamy texture to an otherwise low fat ice cream.
This ice cream uses almond milk for it’s liquid, so it’s a very low fat ice cream base, so the cottage cheese helps to make it creamy without having to add any gums or pudding mixes.
If you’re looking for a high protein, low net carb and low fat ice cream, this one is for you!

Ingredients
- cottage cheese
- unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Tools to make this Ninja Creami Recipe
- Ninja Creami ice cream maker – I am in love with this Ninja Creami.
- Ninja Creami Pints – I opted for these pints because they were about half the price, but be weary if you need them quickly; it took about three weeks to get here. They did have some prime options for other pint containers, but I was being thrifty.
- Ninja Blender – I love my ninja blender. Not only can you use it for the obvious, like smoothies and shakes, but it also works perfectly for making the ice cream base!
How to make chocolate ice cream with cottage cheese in the Ninja Creami
- Add all of the ingredients to a blender, and blend until smooth. It’s okay if some of the cottage cheese doesn’t completely blend. It won’t be clumpy after it’s spun in the Creami.
- Transfer the liquid to a pint and place the lid on securely and transfer to the freezer. Freeze for 24 hours.
- After 24 hours, remove the lid and place the pint into the pint holder. Place the lid with the blade on top and lock into place.
- Run the Ninja Creami on the lite ice cream function. You will need to re-spin it 2 times for the best texture. Tip, if you continue to get a powdery consistency’s try adding in a tablespoon of liquid with the re-spins.
- Optionally, top with sprinkles or your favorite ice cream toppings and enjoy!
Substitutions
If you want to make this even higher in protein, substitute the almond milk with skim milk. To make this a more decadent version, use half and half or cream instead of almond milk.

How to store
Store your chocolate cottage cheese ice cream in the freezer with the lid on. It should last 3 to 6 months in the freezer.
Didn’t finish all of your pint in one sitting? Simply smooth out the ice cream to make it level, place the lid on, and store it in the freezer. When you’re ready to eat your ice cream, you’ll need to select the lite ice cream function again to make it nice and creamy and ready to eat. You may need to re-spin it a few times to get the perfect texture.

Will regular collagen powder work or does it have to be collagen peptides?
Regular collagen protein will work too 🙂
How does it has 23g of protein? 1/3 cottage cheese has about 9g. Almond milk doesn’t add a lot. I can’t figure out these macros.
Collagen peptides have protein
Why the collagen peptides? Is that a nutritional additive or something that makes the ice cream turn out better?
For texture and for nutritional value 🙂
If you omit the collagen, will the texture be altered? I’m a novice with the Ninja Creami
Yes, the collagen helps with the texture – it will take more re-spins and it’ll probably be icy without it
What is a substitute for collagen peptides?
Unflavored beef gelatin or pudding mix
There was no recipe. Told how to make but no amount for the ingredients.
5 stars!
⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Not sure why it won’t let me select 5 stars!
I was skeptical about this recipe based on the ingredients and my past experience with making ice creams that don’t taste good. I decided to give this a try and I am blown away! I love it so much. I can’t stop talking about it. Lol. I can’t wait to make more!
I’m so glad you loved it! Yes, almond milk is tricky to work with, but this one is a keeper!
What regular sweetener could you use in replace of the monk fruit?
Maple syrup or honey. Here’s a post all about Monk Fruit and it’s substations https://giveagirlaspoon.com/what-is-monk-fruit/
I’ve never tried collagen. What is it made from? Is it vegetarian?
It’s from animals
OMG, I added 2 tablespoons of Fatso Salted Carmel Peanut Butter to the recipe, sooo good, also used Chocolate Oat Milk. Thanks for the great recipes!
That sounds delicious!
Could it use rice milk instead?
I’m unsure – I have not made any recipes with rice milk.
Can you use protein powder instead of the collagen peptides? Would it be icy if I made this change?
I haven’t made this exact recipe with protein powder instead of collagen, you might have to spin it a couple extra times.
Can I sub regular milk for almond milk?
I have not tried that in this recipe I’m sorry
